Q&A

DESIGN CHALLENGES

The owners wanted a very modern, contemporary home with an open interior and flexible layout while also meeting the requirements and approvals of historic Herron-Morton Place.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

The interior layout seamlessly flows from and through the kitchen, while the exterior aesthetic has a distinct modern edge that complements the adjacent historic homes.

DON’T MISS THIS

The rooflines align with the carriage house/garage. The exterior natural cedar siding accents and counterbalances with the gray metal siding. The first-floor windows are taller than the second floor window to accentuate the vertical proportions. Red – the owner’s favorite color –  is used to add pops of color at select locations. Interior finishes include exposed concrete at the stairwell walls.

DESIGN INSPIRATION

The rooflines and window opening proportions are derived from adjacent historic homes. The main front façade wad developed with the asymmetry akin to a modern painting.

TAKE AWAY

The exterior materials and colors are generally best kept to three primary elements and colors. When thinking about interior design, consider how the kitchen connects to both the front door (formal) and the back door (casual) in terms of welcoming guests, but also how it’s used by the family, such as bringing in groceries.
